The first lesson with your Trainer is probably the most important. You’ve already communicated your training goals for you and your dog during the program booking process, but it’s this first lesson that allows the opportunity to have a deeper discussion about how the goals are going to be achieved. This also the lesson where you and your dog establish the relationship with your trainer and discuss everyone’s roles along with the roadmap for success.
At K9 Connection, our training is based on improving human/dog communication and turning you into the leader that your dog needs to succeed in life. For this reason, we require that the owner/handler be a full participant in the training process. No matter the program you choose, we make it clear during your first lesson that without your trust in the process, and follow-thru on the things that you and your dog are taught, failure is inevitable in the weeks and months following your program.
This is true for all of our training and especially true with Private Lessons programs where the owner is being trained to train their dog and responsible for doing most of the work during the week between lessons. Each weekly lessons builds upon the previous lesson and the work done between lessons. Doing the work is critical and sometimes the week goes better than expected, and sometimes the progress is slower….and that’s ok. At K9 Connection we know that you can only move at the pace of the dog and handler and that setting unrealistic deadlines can lead to frustration for everyone.
Your paying your trainer for their expertise, feedback and support. Always make the best of your first lesson. Come with an open mind, listen attentively, ask lots of questions, be hands-on, and set realistic goals.
